I like to say I am a novice blacksmith and a professional student.
I may make money by forging, but my truly full time job is learning. 24/7/365 no off days for education. I started blacksmithing as a hobby in October 2019 by building my first forge out of old kiln brick. That forge was not very good, but it set me on a path of perpetual learning, one of many even in my relatively short 23 years on this earth. That first, very cheap forge gave me many lessons, and many more failures, before it finally bit the dust and I built a new, better forge in May 2020. Another year of learning on my own commenced, punctuated by acquisitions such as a proper anvil, multiple vises, and many smithing milestones.
July 2021 I attended the beginner blacksmithing course at New England School of Metalworking in Maine, and left with a head full of knowledge, a book full of sketches, and new friends and acquaintances as well as a bag of forgings I had completed in my quest for knowledge.
